UNIMAK PASS.

Arms draped across Ryan’s supine form, Quinn snuggled tightly into the crook of his arm. His fingertips mindlessly grazed along her arm, the wheels in his brain cranking even more loudly than hers. Despite her dry eyes this morning, she felt emotionally drained.

The nightmares of her past had rared up a few times during the night. When they did, Ryan was there for her. On the times she awoke, they took each other again, washing away the darkness with love.

Smooth sailing today. The ship was silent as the crew had finally crashed, catching a wink of rack time before any more monster sightings. Quinn was surprised at how much demon activity they’d been managing, just day-to-day life around here. According to Willa, they were indirectly headed back for Kodiak for resupply and for official meetings, although a bit delayed after chasing down the kraken. The crew would continue to stay busy gathering intel from other vessels, locals, and whatever data they could compile from their equipment.

Activity in the region was incredible. From the sounds of things, the Valkyrie was probably the busiest ship in the fleet, and no one would ever know it. After Kodiak, they’d continue to gather intel and hunt monsters, making their way toward Sitka. Then, a much-needed break for an exhausted crew on a long deployment.

She wasn’t sure she wanted a break.

For weeks, she’d felt so desperate to find her past. To hunt the demons that haunted her. Now, she wasn’t so sure. Progress, truth... these weren’t always good things. What if her past was a wedge that would drive Ryan away?

At least the memories of her parents grew stronger each day. Underwater, when she’d felt memories pull her under in the blackness exuded by the beast, images of her father had wafted over her like a familiar scent. Never doubt yourself... You’re small but strong... I know one day you will find someone you love as much as I love your mother...

“Ryan?”

“Yes, Quinn?”

“My last name is Fischer.”

Although she couldn’t see his face, she could feel his wide smile as he squeezed her tight against him, those pearly whites showing the joy that grew more and more steady each day. “Quinn Fischer. I like that.”

Propping herself up on her elbow, she grinned down at him. “Was your mom’s last name Hunt?”

His eyes flickering to a deep gunmetal gray, his smile wavering, he looked away for a moment, pointedly returning his gaze. “Doesn’t exactly suit her. Sunshine Hunt. She chose Sunshine at age seventeen in a declaration that she would bring warmth to the world. Hunt was a compromise. Inspired by my father.”

“What was Sunshine doing with a demon hunter?”

Darker, his eyes morphed to onyx, and he suddenly was intent on staring at the poster of the California coast he’d hung at the foot of the bunk in lieu of a window. “He wasn’t a demon hunter.”

“Then, how...?”

Blowing out a long breath of pent-up air, he rubbed his free hand in his hair. “He was a demon.
